You’ve probably heard Sofi Tukker’s music, even if you weren’t aware of their existence. The duo are responsible for “Drinkee”, that inescapably catchy song that you’ve heard in Apple commercials, and subsequently everywhere else. While their absolutely electric live performances speak for themselves, Sofi Tukker proved that they’re weren’t a one-hit wonder in the studio by following “Drinkee” with their phenomenal Soft Animals EP in 2016, and two more smash singles this year. If you still aren’t convinced to check them out, you’re about to be. Sofi Tukker is embarking on a massive opening stint for ODESZA’s North American tour, exposing them to a much broader audience and bringing an absolutely magnetic energy to the A Moment Apart Tour. I was able to steal a bit of Sofi Tukker’s precious time in the midst of their busy schedule to get to know Sophie and Tucker, the beautiful humans behind the music.
The Hypist: You’ve had a crazy summer, playing shows and festivals all over. What’s been one of your favorite moments?
Sofi Tukker: All the shows were really fun but Outside Lands was absolutely insane! We also loved playing at What The Fest outside Portland!
How did the tour with ODESZA come about? It seems like an odd pairing, but I’m super into it.
We think their team saw us at Coachella! We’re really excited 🙂
When trying to describe your sound, I usually start with fancy terms like “eclectic global electro-pop” and end with “You just need to listen to it.” How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard of you?
That sounds about right! We usually end up at the same place!
Your new single “Best Friend” is full of fantastic collaborations. If you could collab with any artist, who would it be?
Stromae or Die Antwoord
Your music videos are all fucking amazing. How much fun was it shooting the “Fuck They” video?
Sooooo much fun. It was as fun as it looked. The whole crew was incredible. Had so much fun that we ended up doing our next music video for Best Friend with Mac Boucher as well. It comes out soon!
What’s the weirdest place you’ve ever played a show?
The Osheaga stage had a floating dance floor on the river! Loooooved it.
Your on-stage presence and chemistry is absolutely magnetic. Do you have as much fun together off-stage as you do at your shows?
Someone hands you the aux cord at a house party that needs to turn up immediately. What’s the first song you play?
Camelphat – Cola
What are you most excited for in 2018?
One Last Question: Taylor Swift, Kesha, or Lana Del Rey?
Lana Del Rey
Sofi Tukker opens ODESZA’s A Moment Apart Tour October 19th, and travels across the continent, including a stop in Portland on November 2nd. Check out the full tour schedule below, and be sure to catch them anywhere you can.
